At a glance

- Assume crocodiles may be present in Top End waterways
- Swim
- Only where current signs say it is open
- Water edge
- Keep back and avoid repeated routines
- Official advice
- Follow park, ranger, and emergency instructions
Treat every warning as current
Crocodile management reduces risk but cannot make uncontrolled waterways predictable. A place that looks clear, shallow, busy, or familiar can still be crocodile habitat. Do not enter water because others are doing it or because an older guide described swimming there.
Use designated swimming facilities and locations that are currently signed open. Closures can follow sightings, flooding, monitoring, or other safety concerns.
Change behaviour near water
Stay well back from riverbanks, creek edges, boat ramps, and tidal flats. Avoid crouching at the edge, cleaning fish near camp, or returning to the same exposed spot at the same time each day. Keep children and pets close.
Fishing from banks and launching small craft require local knowledge. Follow all signs and seek current advice from rangers or experienced operators.
Camping and food handling
Camp only in permitted areas. Keep food scraps, fish remains, and washing water away from the water edge and sleeping areas. Never feed crocodiles or wildlife. Feeding changes animal behaviour and puts other people at risk.
At night, visibility falls while crocodiles remain active. Do not make an unplanned water-edge stop because the campsite looks close on a map.
Wildlife tours
Choose operators that explain safety and natural behaviour without encouraging contact. Compare vessel type, boarding arrangements, accessibility, transfer time, and the wider wetland interpretation, not only the promise of a close sighting.
Before you go
