Water birds lifting off a lily-covered billabong in the Top End at dawn

Wetlands and wildlife

Billabongs, birds and big crocodiles

The floodplains east and south of Darwin hold some of the densest concentrations of waterbirds in Australia, and the highest density of estuarine crocodiles anywhere.

What you can expect to see

Jabiru, the black-necked stork, standing in shallow water like it has somewhere better to be. White-bellied sea eagles and whistling kites. Magpie geese in numbers that make the sky audible. Comb-crested jacanas walking across lily pads. Agile wallabies at dusk on any grassy edge, flying foxes streaming out of Darwin's trees at sunset, and frilled-neck lizards on fence posts if you are lucky.

Late Dry season concentrates birds around shrinking water, which makes June to September the easiest viewing. The Wet spreads everything out but delivers frogs, storms, and country at full green.

When is the best time for birdwatching?
The late Dry, roughly July to September, when water shrinks and birds concentrate. Early morning is far better than midday.
Are wetland cruises safe?
Yes with licensed operators. Stay seated, keep hands and phones inside the boat, and follow the skipper's instructions.
Can I visit Fogg Dam in the Wet?
Access can be restricted by flooding and by crocodile presence on the causeway. Check current conditions before driving out.
