Long straight highway running through savanna woodland in the Northern Territory

Driving the Top End

Road trips and 4WD tracks

Distance is the Territory's defining feature. The driving is easy, the spaces between things are not, and a little preparation turns a long haul into the best part of the trip.

3 hours each way

Darwin to Katherine and Nitmiluk

Adelaide River, Pine Creek, then gorge country, hot springs and a very different landscape.

Darwin to Alice · 15 hours driving

The Explorer's Way south

The Stuart Highway through Mataranka, Daly Waters and the Devils Marbles. Give it a week, not a weekend.

Where you genuinely need a 4WD

  • Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls in Kakadu, high clearance and creek crossings
  • The Reynolds River track through Litchfield
  • Cape Crawford, Limmen and the Roper region tracks
  • Most remote camping access outside the sealed park roads

Hire agreements matter here. Many standard rentals prohibit unsealed roads outright, and insurance is void the moment you cross a creek you were not permitted to cross. Read the conditions before booking, and check whether recovery costs are covered.

Fuel and distance reality check

  • Darwin to Litchfield: roughly 115 km, 90 minutes
  • Darwin to Jabiru in Kakadu: roughly 250 km, 3 hours
  • Darwin to Katherine: roughly 320 km, 3 hours
  • Darwin to Alice Springs: roughly 1,500 km, 15 hours plus stops
Can you do the Top End in a 2WD?
Most highlights, yes, through the Dry season on sealed roads. The remote waterfalls and tracks need a 4WD.
Is it safe to drive at night?
It is best avoided. Wildlife and stock on unfenced roads cause most single-vehicle incidents up here.
Do roads close in the Wet?
Regularly. Unsealed roads and some park access close for weeks at a time. Check official road reports the morning you drive.
