The rule is short: swim where it is designated and monitored, and admire everything else from the bank. Follow it and the Top End gives you some of the best freshwater swimming in the country.

Why the ocean is off the list

Darwin's beaches look inviting and are genuinely beautiful to walk. They are also estuarine crocodile habitat, and marine stingers including box jellyfish and Irukandji occur in coastal waters, mainly from October to May. Casuarina, Mindil, Nightcliff and the harbour are for sunsets and fishing, not swimming.

Freshwater habits worth keeping

  • Swim only at signposted, open sites and never alone
  • Enter feet first and check depth. Rocks shift between seasons
  • Avoid swimming at dawn and dusk, when crocodiles are most active
  • Do not swim in rivers, creeks or billabongs, whatever the water looks like
  • After heavy rain, assume currents are stronger and sites may be closed
Can you swim at Darwin's beaches?
No. Crocodiles and marine stingers make ocean swimming unsafe. Use the Waterfront lagoons, Lake Alexander or a public pool.
Are Litchfield pools crocodile free?
Rangers survey and clear designated swimming sites, and close them when risk changes. That management is why those sites are swimmable and unmanaged waterways are not.
Is stinger season a real concern?
Yes, particularly October to May. Even outside those months, ocean swimming is not recommended here for crocodile reasons.
